Lecturer/Program Coordinator

Taught ESP courses focusing on IT, Education, Law, and Business to university students at all levels with emphasis on reading and writing for critical thought and problem solving. Designed and oversaw English for IT program which incorporated active use of web-based materials for student research, interaction, and test preparation. Trained colleagues in cyber-educationtheory and method.

Visiting Lecturer

EFL/SAT instructor to students with skill levels basic to advanced. Additionally, taught English writing and literature as many students were “returnees” having studied abroad and/or preparing to go to overseas universities. Responsible for course syllabi, materials selection, day-to-day implementation, test design, and student evaluation. Planned and conducted workshops for peer professional development.

Conducted advanced level with emphasis on reading, vocabulary building, discourse techniques, writing, and general grammar and TOEFL reviews. Students were professionals, graduates, post-doctorates or visiting scholars. Goal of program was full use of English in all cognitive activities, enhancing performance in chosen expertise—think and function in English. Responsible for complete curriculum design in which discussion, writing, and presentation were stimulated by:

·         e-mail for student interaction

·         modern World literature, music, & film written in, or translated into, English.

Royal Saudi Naval Forces/TINS, Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Teacher

EFL instructor to naval cadets, implementing DOD’s intensive language training program—American Language Course. Taught six classes per day of 20+ university-age students from beginner to advanced levels. Prepared course materials and lesson plans. Designed, monitored, and graded tests and exams. Conducted language and computer labs. Trained fellow teachers in computer assisted learning (CALL).

6-9/98 (Summer Intensive)

ASPECT at Mills College, Oakland, CA

Instructor/Course Developer/Advisor

Taught all levels of ESL to late teen through thirty students from Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Italy, and Ecuador. Additionally taught business English program in which the building of web sites formed the focus activity. Duties included 30 hours of classroom instruction per week, design of all curricula and testing. Provided counseling for students continuing on into American universities and colleges as well as placing advanced students in intern programs with local corporations. This was an intensive summer program, which required significant social interaction as well as traditional classroom work.

Saudi ARAMCO (Arab American Oil Company), Jeddah ITC, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 

Technical Trainer (English Teacher) 

Contract EFL/EAP/ESP trainer in ARAMCO’s Basic, Intensive, and Professional Programs. Taught minimum of five contact hours daily to classes of adult Saudi employees. Prepared lesson plans, participated in the development of curriculum and tests, computer assisted learning applications (CALL), and all phases of instructional design. Conducted peer professional development groups with emphasis on strategies for computer assisted learning (CALL).

Chollanamdo Office of Education, Kwangju, South Korea 

Teacher/Program Developer 

Under the Korean Government’s “Globalization” program, developed and implemented innovative methods for English acquisition in Kurye County. Directly supervised English program at all Secondary School levels—course development (content & material), training of teachers (thirty +), as well as contact instruction in first through third year programs with classes of forty + students. Privately tutored adult professionals and local government officials.

Instructor/Course Developer 

Taught all aspects of English as a Foreign Language, English Literature, American History and Culture to various levels of native Japanese speakers (beginner to advanced), preparing to enter American universities. Provided academic and cultural counseling. Designed courses implementing “communicative” approach—survival skills through advanced: grammar, reading/writing, integrated studies, TOEFL preparation, computer lab applications, newsletter and video production.

Designed and conducted writing workshops for undergraduate classes using American writers of diverse ethnicities as focus. Implemented and supervised Macintosh and UNIX-based e-mail Writing/Course Study Forum. Lectured on Intercultural Communication, Speech Communication, and American History.

University of Pennsylvania, Annenberg School, Philadelphia, PA (9/85-6/87) 

Taught critical and analytical writing with focus on film theory and structure. Lectured on film and video. Taught ESL classes to all ages. Organized small group video projects for inner-city youth-language acquisition, multi-cultural awareness, conflict resolution. ESL/LEP consultant to the Greater Philadelphia Indo-Chinese Association.

Consultant for intercultural and international communication—research, courseware design, and media production—with emphasis on computer-based technologies for cross-cultural learning in the fields of business, academe, and social service.  Most recent contracts: EFL CALL curriculum development and teacher training for Hong Kong public school system (6-12/1998) and Georgetown Univ./USAID—ESIT, Bankja Bulgaria (1-4/2000).

1982-1984 VIDEO USA, San Francisco CA/Kyoto, Japan—USA-Japan video producer. 

Established company with business associates in Japan. Produced and directed documentary videos focusing on cross-cultural issues for American and Japanese television.

Promoted, organized, and led mountaineering and adventure tours expeditions to the Himalayan regions of Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, and China. Pioneered ecological/educational tourism.
